Lake McConaughy Helpful Hints

The Sailors of Division Five are looking forward to having you as our guests, and we hope you may find some of this information useful as you look forward to spending time at our favorite sailing venue in all of Division Five.

 From Stephen Cooley:

  • Keep in Mind that Nebraska State Park System has a Zero Tolerance policy on Alcohol.
  • Also remember it is a holiday weekend, so the Park Rangers and Sheriff patrols will be significantly increased.
  • We here in Fleet 61 have learned that as long as we keep any consumption of our “Beach Beverages” on the “down low” the park personnel pretty much leave us alone.
  • Pour your beach beverages into an unmarked cup, do not leave containers exposed ANYWHERE.  If they see one, it gives them probable cause to look further.
  • The Biggest thing they are looking for is that everyone’s vehicle has proper park entry permits and camping permits in the windshield.
  • If we work hard at compliance with THAT issue, then that stacks the odds in favor of a trouble free weekend.
  • If they see vehicles without entry permits, then that gives them a reason to hang around and start looking at other things.

There will be a Trailer Farm Area up in the parking lot.

  • PLEASE USE IT after launching your boat.  More room for camping in the trees and down by the water, AND, then no one is tripping over trailers in the dark.  Moving the trailers out of the regatta/beach area makes for a much more enjoyable week.

 From Mr. Bob Forshay:

  • Bring quarters for showers,
  • Trash bags, water and/or containers for drinking/cooking.
  • Parks pass’s are available on line, http://www.lakemcconaughy.com/
  • If you are staying more than 2 or 3 days, the annual pass costs less than buying the daily pass
  • Daily camping fees must be paid in addition to the park entry permits.

 From Mr. Tom Machette,

  • Don’t forget to bring sun block, bug spray, and sand screws!

 From Bill McBride, Local Guru

  • Sand is really soft- RV's may want to stay up in parking lot,
  • Or count on paying a tractor to get moved out.
  • ($40.00 covers a round trip, one in and one out)
  • Bring sand anchors for boats.  NO, doggie anchors will NOT work.   These can be purchased at local hardware stores get at least 24” in length for boats, (Ace Hardware etc...)
  • Use Sand anchors for tents as well, for tents 18” is enough on the corners.
From Ms. Renee Galvin Fleet Mom:
  • Wear shoes up in the trees and parking areas.  The little burrs (goat heads) leave horrible little stickers in your feet.  Bring aqua socks as there are sand burrs up in parking lot.  Dogs tend to get these in their paws as well; it can be painful to them as well.
  • Quarters for showers- .25 per minute. (feed quarters one at a time as you need water- not all at once in the beginning ").
  • Fill drinking water containers at the hose at Arthur Bay entrance Shower Facility, or at the Lone Eagle Campground.
  • There are Electrical outlets in bathrooms, and shower in the evenings, best for less crowds, and better water temps.

Ogallala NE

  • State patrol and sheriff run route between town and Lake pretty heavily.  Holiday Weekend will mean extra sheriff and state patrol presence.
  • DO NOT exceed posted speed limits, 45mph north of Ogallala and 25 mph down to beach.
  • DO NOT drink and drive, there are plenty of people that don’t drink if you need to go somewhere.  Even if it is just to the rest rooms.
  • Wifi available for purchase from local Ogallala company. (purchase before you arrive).
  • Seems the cheapest gas is station ~4? blocks east of downtown on US Highway 30.  Gas by the interstate is Extremely expensive.
  • Buy food items (specifically perishables) at Safeway on your way through town rather than packing and transporting it all.  (note No deli at Safeway).
  • Local Grocery store west of the main drag on Highway 30 DOES have a Deli, and there is a Subway sandwich shop on the south side of the interstate @ the Conoco Station.
  • Buy ice at Safeway on your way through town, approx half the cost of what places near lake charge.

 What to Bring

  • Bring koozis/ drink keepers.
  • Bring one extra empty cooler to transport ice if need be.
  • Sand anchors for tents and boats.
Stay with low profile tents- tall ones don't fare too well in wind.
  • For night time temperature dips, Bring one set of cold weather clothes.
  • If you bring Fido (Dog), Bring baggies for doggie doo-doo- and throw out in dumpsters on main road- NOT in the trash at fleet tent.
  • DO NOT BURY DOG WASTE.  It can cause E-coli problems on the beach.  This may only be a venue to you, but it is our home lake, help us keep it clean, safe, and nice.
  • Leash law at lake- ticket if ranger catches dog off leash.
